Les deux chanteuses du groupe t.A.T.u. se Nomment Yulia et Lena .

Lena Sergeevna Katina est née à Moscou le 4 octobre 1984.
c'est l'ainée de deux autres soeurs
De 1991 à 2001, elle fréquente l'école élémentaire,
puis la Junior et Senior High School #457 de Moscou.
Elle a fait partie de la chorale " Avenue " de 1994 à 1997,
et de la chorale " Neposedi " de 1997 à 1999.
Devenue membre du duo t.A.T.u. en août 1999, elle est, depuis 2001,
étudiante en psychologie à l'université d'État de Moscou.

Yulia Volkova Olegovna est née à Moscou le 20 février 1985.
Elle est fille unique.
De 1992 à 1996, elle fréquente la Junior High School #882 de Moscou,
puis la Senior High School #1113 de Moscou de 1996 à 2000.
Membre de la chorale " Neposedi " à partir de 1996,
elle en est renvoyée en 1998. Elle devient membre du duo t.A.T.u. en août 1999.
Depuis 2000, elle suit les cours de l'école de musique de Moscou,
en spécialisation chant. Elle est mère d'une fille de trois ans nommée Viktoria
née le 23 septembre 2004, et d'un petit garçon né le 27 décembre 2007.

Leurs parcours
La célébrité de ce groupe est en partie due à la mise en scène de l'homosexualité supposée des deux chanteuses dans les vidéoclips et les prestations scéniques, notamment pour la chanson Ya shosla s uma (littéralement J'ai perdu l'esprit — le titre anglais est All the things she said, soit Tout ce qu'elle a dit), de leur premier album. L'apparence des deux jeunes chanteuses a été conçue pour donner l'impression de deux lycéennes dans une institution : chemises et soquettes blanches, cravate sombre, jupe courte plissée... Lors de leurs prestations scénique ou de leur vidéoclips, tout n'est pas prétexte pour jouer sur l'érotisme comme beaucoup le pensent mais pour montrer que l'amour ne se produit pas seulement entre un homme et une femme.

Le groupe t.A.T.u. a fait l'objet d'une promotion fortement axée sur la recherche d'une provocation jugée très commerciale par un grand nombre de personnes, qui a pu se traduire par la censure dans leur vidéoclip de la scène où elles s'embrassent (cas de la chaîne M6 en France lors de certaines diffusions). Malgré cette approche fortement orientée par des choix inspirés par le marketing, le groupe a fini par attirer l'attention grâce à la qualité de sa musique produite par le Britannique Trevor Horn (ex-Buggles, également producteur épisodique des Pet Shop Boys, d'OMD, d'Erasure, des Lightning Seeds, etc.)

Au printemps 2004, Lena et Yulia se sont séparées de leur manager Ivan Shapovalov. Yulia Volkova a eu une petite fille nommée Victoria et un petit garçon nommé (les sources ne sont pas sures) Sam né le 27 décembre 2007 qu'elle a eu de son compagnon Parviz.

Dans des interviews récentes, elles affirment être réellement tombées amoureuses l'une de l'autre, étant jeunes, mais l'idée de le montrer explicitement venait de leur ancien manager.
